Why Borderlands is Brilliantly Barmy?

More Importantly Why Does it work?

Graphic Cartoon violence, Huge Explosions, Lovable characters and especially funny dialogue, what more could there be to want from a game as … unique? Borderlands hit the gaming scene in the year of 2009. Eleven years later Borderlands still has its place cut and burned deep into our grizzly hearts. What with the recent release of Borderlands 3. However what truly draws us in to the cartoon freak world of Borderlands ?

To find out a possibility of why this game leaves such an impact on our hearts and minds I decided to turn attention to a fan. Mr, James Carpenter and what he thought about the mad mad world. The simplest way to do that was to ask Why?

Why does our fan here like playing Borderlands ?

here is what Mr. Carpenter had to say.

I like playing borderlands and its various sequels as it combines a really enveloping story, full of rich, well-performed characters with a fun, hectic and very lively style of FPS. Which is also perfectly adapted for multi-player scenarios and playthroughs. It’s basically a game series that knows it’s for people to play together and if they dont, it still provides a vast array of personalities and fun situations for you to enjoy.

Compelling characters and fun scenarios developed for a rather grand gaming experience. This is Mr. Carpenters attraction is it yours? If you had to pick a favourite could you? Are there any situations that stick out? (oh also for those of you who are not big gaming terminology nerds FPS stands for First Person Shooter) The next burning question I wanted to ask our fan here was expanding from his own enjoyment of the game and into why the game was successful overall?

Why do you think the borderlands game series is successful?

Here is what Mr. Carpenter thought

Its’ success comes from having a unique angle on any area of the FPS genre; an inventive and graphic art style, highly customisation player character options, an endless loot and shoot system, hilarious story-lines and dialogue, revolutionary co-op systems and its charming in its dark humour and satirical foundations.

I must admit some of the best laughs at any game I have played has been at Borderlands there is comedy to be found every step of the way in its weird world. I do see where Mr. Carpenter comes from especially with certain characters such as a lovable little robot that tries and fails time and time again. Claptrap. By far my favourite character. as seen in the image below.

The next question I had prepared for Mr. Carpenter explored the genre that Borderlands belongs to, First Person Shooter. Specifically about the appearance of Borderlands the question I asked was.

Do you think a first-person shooter has to always be serious or can it be more funny and satirical or cartoon-ish like borderlands?

This is what Mr. Carpenter replied.

I think that FPS games started and have remained serious for a long time and there is a huge audience for that, but in order to further the genre, investigations must be made into new territories and that is where I think Borderlands came from; a brand new version of an established genre that flips the serious and gritty origins of FPS games on it’s head and admits that, for a large portion of the gaming community, watching stuff blow-up can be and is really funny.

A change in direction and exploration of new ways to redevelop the first person shooter genre sprung the spawn of Borderlands, and it shows. A game that took the serious and threw it aside for the humour. Yet we still see the hidden seriousness within the story and this has captured the hearts of the gaming community. Perhaps as Mr. Carpenter says sometimes a good ol’ explosion is all that is needed to fill a belly full of laughs and bring a rather explosively positive experience to the player..

Following up on this I wanted to find out If indeed Borderlands was perfect or whether it had its flaws too and if what were they here is what I asked Mr. Carpenter.

Do you think there is anything bad about the game that could be done better ?

Here is the opinion of Mr. Carpenter

Honestly, if you’d asked me after Borderlands; The pre-sequel had been released, I would’ve said that they were relying too heavily on their established story-line and characters from the first game and that’s what really brought it down, the reliance on already completed material, almost like the whole game was a shout-out to its predecessor. Although, with the release of Borderlands 3, I think they perfectly addressed the issues they were having with repetitiveness and included some fantastic new playable character options with fascinating game-play options and a story-line that both survives as a single piece of the borderlands narrative and an introduction into a larger scale story.

A problem with most games is receptivity and a game growing boring for the players. The game company nightmare when their game becomes boring and then starts to lose its community. However Just as Mr. Carpenter has touched upon here if a game notices these issues and creates a game to specifically tackle the problems for the interest of its players then the game will more than likely regain its community and then some for the company has proven unto the players the knowledge that the players matter. However sometimes even if a game does listen and try to fix the problem they end up making a flop and when that happens the game sadly fades away being replaced by newer better perhaps even more fun games out there. This was what I wanted to find out for my last question to Mr. Carpenter.

Do you think borderlands will be replaced in the future or will it remain to be a big hit ?

This was the final thoughts from Mr. Carpenter for me

I don’t think it will be replaced by anything as it spans so many fresh angles on the FPS genre of gaming there are definite nods to Borderlands in terms of its competitors but I don’t think there will be anything that can truly replace it, but they can try and pay homage to it.

Borderlands is the first game in its genre to set an example and show the gaming community a weird and wonderful world of completely uncharted territory . This is the reason why nothing will ever compare and exactly how it managed to completely immerse us wholly within its story. Borderlands was made in 2009 but could end up being timeless.
